Mary Marsh's artist statement:

I have lived in Sequim, Washington with my husband, John, since 1994. We live on a dirt road, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Every day we welcome the forest creatures that feel safe visiting our property. This breath-taking corner of the northwest gives me inspiration for my artwork.

I am a mixed media artist, which means I apply many different materials and techniques, combining them into unique pieces of art. I like recycling materials in unusual ways. You might find old computer parts, feathers, jewelry, chopsticks, clock parts or any variety of found objects in my art.

I like to work spontaneously, not planning too far ahead, as I like the textures and colors to surprise me. I might have an idea of the direction I want to go, but I like to be open to where the creative process might lead me. I have worked in many mediums through the years, including pottery, jewelry (metal and glass), mask making, collage, assemblage and acrylics, watercolor and photography. I love the challenge of creating one-of-a-kind collage pieces using many different techniques, textures, colors, tools, and methods. Collage allows me to use all I have learned in the past to help me express myself in my current work. It is always challenging, exciting and fun.

I also love photography. I take my camera with me everywhere I go, and my husband is used to me yelling “Stop the car and let me out!”, when I see an image I feel I have to capture. Many of my photographs have been published locally.

My art is unique; it makes me happy and I hope others will connect with me in some way when they see it.

Since 2005, I have had numerous pieces accepted in over 17 juried shows, winning several awards for my art and photography. I have had over 185 photographs published in our local newspapers. I am currently the Historian/Photographer for Sequim Arts.
